Olympic Games 2004 Athens The new coin bears commemorative design on its national side, where, inside the perimeter defined by the twelve stars, is depicted the Discobole –the well known statue of the great Greek sculptor Myron, who lived in the 5th century B.C. The depiction was based on the roman bronze reproduction of the statue, which is displayed at the British Museum in London. On the same side, the Olympic circles, the ATHENS 2004 logo in English and the indication of the coins face value (“2 euro”) in Greek are also depicted. The painter and engraver Panagiotis Gravvalos designed the depiction and the sculptor Konstantinos Kazakos made its plaster cast. |

An ear of wheat, an ear of maize and an ear of rice, the three grains representing the world's basic sources of nourishment, emerge from behind the globe. To the right of the globe is an ‘I’ superimposed on an ‘R’, denoting ‘Repubblica Italiana’, below which there appears a smaller combination of the letters U and P, the initials of the engraver, Uliana Pernazza. To the upper left of the globe is the mint mark ‘R’ and under the globe is the year – ‘2004’. The 12 stars of the European Union are positioned around the outer circle. Designed by Uliana Pernazza |

Bartolomeo Borghese (historian, numismatist) Bartolomeo Borghesi was born in Savignano sul Rubicone (Forlì, Italy) on July 11, 1781. He studied in Ravenna, then in Bologna, and in 1801 he went to Rome to study law. Famous epigraphist, great expert of numismatics, he achieved European renown in that field establishing the scientific laws of numismatics. He was a member of many Academies in Europe including the famous Lincei Academy, but the most explicit sign of the universal admiration for Borghesi was seen soon after his death, when the emperor Napoleon III began the noble undertaking of collecting and publishing his works. In 1821 Borghesi moved to the Republic of San Marino and begun publishing the seventeen decades of his Numismatic Observations, one hundred and seventy articles about the coinage of the Roman republic, a series of studies, analyses, critiques and dissertations that are still of interest today to numismatic scholars. In 1838 he was issued an invitation to represent the Republic of San Marino at the coronation of the Emperor of Austria in Milan. He died on April 16, 1860 in the Republic of San Marino and was interred in the Basilica of the Saint opposite the monument to Antonio Onofri. Designed by Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini |
